About Me

Howdy! You have reached the personal portfolio and journal of Derek Balmer. I am a designer living and working in Denver, CO.

A little about myself

I am a full time father, husband, designer and part time diabetic. I’m into consuming too much caffeine and listening to fast music that consists of no more than three bar chords. I like tattoos, all things design, especially CSS and anything mobile. It has been noted that I am unhealthily obsessed with checking the expiration dates of condiments, meat and dairy products before consumption. When I’m not working I am either neglecting my friends, hanging with my amazing wife and daughter, or putting down some laps at the local track.

Professional

I spent the past four and a half years at 9 Squared, where I was the Director of Creative Services. After many years of working with a great group of people in the mobile media space, I decided to step out and do my own thing. In June of 2007 I started Kick Start Mobile with two friends, Brett Duncavage and former 9 Squared CEO and founder, James Eberhard. On any given day I’m either creating brands, building websites, designing mobile applications or thinking about the next big thing. I have worked in every aspect of print, web and mobile design for years and I absolutely love what I do. Thanks for taking the time to read this nonsense.

Info

I designed this site on a Mac. Wrote the XHTML and CSS using BBEdit TextMate. I use ExpressionEngine for my CMS because it rocks my face in and I host it all at Dreamhost because they are righteous.
